Fundraising for Haryer Aden

I am helping Haryer Aden, a community based project, raise funds for Ramadan.

Haryer (pronounced Haraar) was set up by three Yemeni friends in the UK, in 2016. One of those friends, my mother who, after her last remaining siblings died at the beginning of the first war in 2015, decided to use the family home as a base for a free school for local children. The friends worked together and found teachers who now give their time three days a week to teach children who can not afford to go to school.

Food donations that went to many families in the area. A party was held for the kids at the end of term.

Much of the donations (money and items) raised come from close family and friends of the organisers. It is then sent to Aden, where it is put to good use. On their journeys to Yemen and the Emerites, the women take over donations of clothes, medical equipment and other supplies such as school supplies.

They have also made money by holding community based training courses. For instance, they run a bakhoor (arabic perfume/incense) course. The proceeds from the course participants as well as the sale of the bakhoor went to the project.

Although the house is used and the women in the UK support and help organise the project from the UK, much of the work is done by volunteers in Aden, who use their time to help get supplies to poorer families, help run the school and help identify the people most in need of Haryer services and funds. Without their help, this project would not be a success. Our role is to provide as many donations as possible in order for them to do their job effectively.

I have, over the last few weeks decided to get involved in the organisation, mainly to help them do some much needed administration (website, social media) and help them set up the organisation’s legal status. I have also helped them set up a GOFUNDME fundraiser for Ramadan and Eid el-Fitr.

Haryer Activities:

  • Providing a school 3 days a week.

  • Helping people with medical costs (hospital fees, medication costs, medical devices)

  • Running adult educational programs (attendees pay) where the money goes to the charity

  • Supporting local enterprise

  • Receiving donations of clothing, equipment, books and other necessities

  • Helping local, small enterprise

The fundraiser has been going for about a week now and it has been pretty successful however we do have a way to go to reach our target of £1,500, so if you have any money spare that you can donate that would be highly appreciated. My mother told me that when the exchange rate has been good, they have been able to provide food to 120 families.
